Three Reasons to Rehearse Your Next Presentation

Time is an issue for everyone, and you might think you don’t have time to rehearse for your next presentation. On the other hand, your performance before a group, even a small group in a conference room, influences people’s perception of you and shapes your future.

Here are three benefits of rehearsal:

  • You seem polished and in control.
Audience members easily forgive an occasional mistake, but a presentation riddled with stumbles gives the impression of a poorly prepared professional. The presenter seems either rude or incompetent, depending on the listener’s perspective.
  • You can engage your audience to embrace your vision.
Nothing establishes connection with an audience like strong eye contact. You sell your ideas most effectively when you make eye contact for a full 4 to 5 seconds (the time it takes to complete a thought) with individual audience members. Only a person who has rehearsed can manage this.
  • You beat the glitches.
Rehearsal helps you catch and fix problems ranging from awkward phrases to PowerPoint glitches to projector disasters. Command of a presentation gives the impression that you can command a promotion or a bigger project. Of course, the opposite is also true.

Rehearsal for a presentation—large or small—can help you to appear competent and confident. It can make you seem poised for the next career step. It’s your future. Rehearse for it!
